4Ridge Racer 3D or Asphalt 3D? Can't Go Wrong Either Way!  Apr 03, 2011 By Rick Moore
I bought Asphalt 3D first and I am happy with it. Then I bought Ridge Racer 3D and I am happy with that as well. I think they're both excellent racing games and you really can't go wrong with either one. Ridge Racer's graphics are a little more fluid and the cars handle a bit more realistically than the ones in Asphalt 3D in my opinion. The thing I like about Asphalt 3D over Ridge Racer is that you can do take downs and there is oncoming traffic unlike in RR where everyone is going the same direction. Also, Asphalt 3D has a pursuit mode where you run from the law which is always fun. BUT the thing I like about Ridge Racer over Asphalt 3D is the slipstreaming, the drifting, and the graphics are a tad less choppy looking. (Don't let that scare you. The choppiness is very minimal anyway.) The car handling in Ridge Racer to me seems a little more realistic than it does in Asphalt 3D. So, bottom line: If you want a great straight forward Racing game, get Ridge Racer 3D. If it's vengeance and aggression you want in a racing game, get Asphalt 3D. Graphically, the image in Ridge Racer seems a little less grainy-looking than in Asphalt 3D to me. As another reviewer mentioned, the opening animation in Ridge Racer is very cool...a little flirty. :) If I had to choose one of these over the other....h-m-m.....I think Ridge Racer would win. I like that there are more tracks available in the beginning.

5You know what you're getting  Mar 27, 2011 By thewiirocks
If you've played the Asphalt games for iOS, this is basically the same thing. In fact, it appears to be Asphalt 5.

If you've played it for DSiWare, then this is that, but much better.

Here's the thing: The 3D effect supercharges this game into something awesome. You know how you tend to pick up power-ups by trying to drive into the general vicinity of the items and hoping for the best? No more! With the depth perception offered by the 3DS, you can nail those power-ups each and every time.

Similarly, I had a lot of trouble with take-downs in Asphalt 5. Judging the relative position of other cars can be tricky, leading to a number of near misses. With the 3DS, it's a snap! In fact, you can zip by passenger cars within inches and come off unscathed due to the depth perception of the 3DS.

A lot of reviews have panned this game. Many of the same reviewers panned Just Dance. Don't listen to them. If you enjoy Asphalt even in the slightest, you will LOVE this game!

5Way better than many reviewers give it credit.  Apr 30, 2011 By Brooke Alexander
I've read many of the reviews on Amazon and gaming websites. I have this game on the IOS and perhaps I should start there. On the iOS it is very hard to play (iPad). It is tough to race and get the power ups using the accelerometer and the game is just clunky. That's just on the iOS.

Now on the 3ds this game is a fun and challenging game with better graphics than the pictures above let on. It is truly a fun arcade racer. I have Ridge Racer as well and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that this game is much better. ridge Racer is fun too but it has an annoying ladies voice in it every two seconds and the drifting gets old real quick. This game has many more challenges, race types, great graphics, better cars with customizations and auto parts, take downs, and it isn't too difficult but yet not too easy. It is a challenging game that is truly a pleasure to play.

I absolutely recommend this game, even if (no especially if) you have the similar game on the IOS.

FYI, this game is different than the IOS version in many more ways than can count. If you like racers get it. Have fun.

3Fun but glitchy graphics  May 24, 2011 By Berry Blue
I'm having a lot of fun playing this game but the graphics can get really glitchy. It's hard to describe but certain moments the graphics will skip around or get jerky. It feels really unrealistic at times too especially when crashing into other cars. I'm not sure if the 3DS just has a weak processor or something but the game physics could be a lot better.

4Excellent arcade racer  Apr 04, 2011 By Lazypoko
When the 3DS came out I knew that I wanted to get a racing game for it. After reading some reviews and hearing that this was more of an arcade style racer I decided I would choose this over Ridge Racer. I can not speak to the quality of the ridge racer game, but I can confidently say that this is an excellent arcade style racer racer, especialy for a system launch title.

Visuals - The game is very colorful and the graphics are spectacular. It obviously doesn't compare to a computer or console game as far as looks, but it is more than you could hope for on a hand held system. The different race tracks all have very distinct looks that are brought to life with vibrant lights, snow, water and building that accurately represent the city you are racing in.

Soound - The sound is not outstanding but I never expect it to be a for any handheld system. The engines tend to not have enough base, but I Imagaine a good pair of headphones could fix this. The music is catchy enough that it won't annoy you, but not so good that you will have it stuck in you head all day.

Gameplay (outside of races) - This is my biggest and only real issue with this game. When moving from menu to menu, the game is pretty smooth. Load screens are relatively short and infrequent. However, when changing from one car to another, you often have to wait 5 or more seconds before your next car will pop up on the screen so you can see what it is and what stats it has. This may not seem like a big issue, but if you have to pan through 15 cars to pick the one you want, and it take 5 -10 seconds per car, you are looking at 2 minutes or so of nothing but pushing the joy stick to the right to try and pick a car that you already know you want. This gets annoying.
despite the annoying loading time from car to car, the actually car design is fun and simple. You choose the color of your car and (as you unlock them) can pick from a plethera of different decals. The only issue here is that the decals themselves are no customizable. They are a set color and stay in a set position. This isn't really a big issue since the cars look good anyway. The upgrading of your cars is very simple (reminds me of a racing game i played for the NEs but can't remember what it was called). There are 3 main categories speed, turbo and steering. each category has some subcatagories (I.E. turbo has capacity, extra speed etc). To make your car faster you go to a category and purchase each level of upgrade (as you unlock them) for each car you want to be faster. There is no more customization after that. So, if you are not a car person and don't want to worry about how much low end torch you want, or how much power you want going to the back wheels, this system is perfect.

Gameplay (on the track) - The actual racing of the game is very smooth. It feels like an arcade racer that you would play at... the arcade. The controls are simple enough that you wont feel overwhelmed, but complicated enough that you wont feel like all you are doing is hitting the gas and turning. The 3D effect while racing adds a new level to the game play. The tail end of your car along with the streaks your tires leave behind pop out of the screen and there is a noticable depth to the other cars and items on the road. The different types of races are all fun, and while similar, they each have their own unique aspect. there are drifting, normal race, one on one, money grabber, time trial, and rule the road. (those names may be wrong, but you get the idea) I personally find the drifting races to be the most difficult.

Length - If your goal is just to get through all the races, then this game can be pretty short. However, if you choose to go through and get all the achievments (2 per race) and get 1st place in every race (one per race... duh) then you will have more than a satisfactory amount of play time.

All in all, an excellent arcade racer launch title. If you want a racing game I would highly reccomend this. Mucho Funno.
